| Mesothelioma is a form of cancer which is characterized by the fact that malignant tumor is found in the protective saccule which covers most of the body's internal organs. Physicians identify is as mesothelium. Still, they are also quick to accuse asbestos as the central cause of this sort of cancer when a person breathes in these small parts. This disease is infrequent, but very serious and in the majority of cases leads to death.
As it's already clear the name mesothelioma comes from mesothelium, a protective saccule that coats and shields most of the internal organs of the body including the lungs and heart. This allows such moving organs like beating heart and the expansible lungs to slide without any difficulty against adjacent structures.
The name mesothelium is quite rarely applied to cancer processes. The cause is that saccules shielding different organs are named in different ways. In such a way, sac of the heart is called as a rule pericardium, coat of the lungs and chest cavity is often called pleura, coat of the stomach is generally called peritoneum. The most widespread location of mesothelioma swelling is pleura. Note that reproductive organs of males and females are also covered with mesothelium but the cases of mesothelioma cancer in these areas are very rare.
The mesothelioma swelling may be in one of 2 variants: a benign and a malignant type of the cancer. The benign version isn't going to lead to the lethal termination. A diagnosis of malignant Mesothelioma is often fatal, but not always. A Mesothelioma diagnosis was a death sentence around 20 years ago. This is no longer the case.
